Try Outs

I've been helping at the Empress for a year or two now and love it. I was in plays, choir, and dance in junior high and have really missed being able to perform since I graduated high school. I have wanted to try out for one of the plays at the Empress for a while now, but I was busy with school, or work, or just life and never got a chance to do it. Well, I finished my degree at the end of last year so that is no longer an excuse. After talking about it with Wil and many debates with myself, I decided I would try out for Annie. The tryouts were on Saturday. I convinced my oldest niece, Annee, to try out with me. She really wants to be in Little Women that's coming up later this year and I figured this would be a good experience for her and help her when she trys for Little Women.

So, Annee and I showed up at the Empress early on Saturday morning. We were both really nervous, but were handling it. The lobby was full of young girls. I was the only adult female trying out that morning (some may have arranged to try out at a different time, I don't know) and one of the few adults who were trying out at all that morning. We had our resumes and headshots in hand as well as our music. We'd rehearsed our songs on the drive over (which also gave our voices a chance to warm up a bit). We filled out the audition application and waited. Someone was in the lobby to teach us the dance for the try out. After working on it for a while, we finally had it down. After that, we moved towards the entrance to the stage so we could wait to be sent onstage to do our song.

I went before Annee. When I came in, the director said, "Yea! An adult!". I song my song, a little quiter than I would have liked, but oh well, and went back to the lobby to wait for my dance try out and for Annee to be finished. Annee ended up not being able to sing as high as the music was written and the piano player couldn't change the key for her so she had to do it without music (very nerve wracking for her). She said she felt good about though, although she was a little quiter than she should have been as well. We both did well on our dance tryout though. Once we were both done with the dance portion, we left.

Anyway, now it is Monday and I'm anxiously awaiting for news about whether I made it or not. If they want me back for call backs, which is on Wednesday, I'll probably get a call. Otherwise, the cast list will just be posted on the Empress' website, I think. I know I shouldn't expect anything until tonight, but I can't help but check the website every few hours. I really need to find a way to distract myself. Work just isn't cutting it. Oh well, I'm sure I'll survive.

  1. I have been checking the website several times a day also...now that call backs are over though, is it too late? This doesn't seem very organized at all.

  2. Call back are tonight so my guess is that the final cast list will be posted tomorrow or something. I noticed on Facebook Monday night that the Empress page was asking for more male actors to try out at the call backs. I think the directors are just waiting for that to be done and then the final list will be posted. It's really irritating though.
